Learning to Wingfoil is so much easier if you are in the correct location, with the correct equipment and with great instruction. The best locations have flat water that is deep enough for the ‘mast’ under the board. Instruction should ideally be private, with the instructor following you in a boat, jet ski, or similar. Where this is not possible, headsets with a built-in intercom system can be used. Group instruction is, of course, cheaper (and can be fun), but it is hard for an instructor to instruct multiple students, and often it means sharing equipment. However, there is some advantage in that you can learn from others mistakes.
The main steps on a learn to Wingfoil course during your Wingfoil holiday will be:
- - Learning how to fly the handheld Wing on the beach
- - Standing on a large stable Standup Paddlebaord, or similar, whilst flying the hand-held Wing
- - Next, move to a large stable Wingfoil board with a short mast attached to the underside and a large beginner-friendly hydrofoil. During these sessions, you should get used to the feeling of ‘getting on foil’ (rising up out of the water).
If you have no experience of any board sports or other related ‘wind sports’, then we would recommend a minimum of 4 lessons (each lesson being 2-3 hours). Progression will very much depend on any previous related experience you have and your confidence, but also the correct conditions will have a huge impact on your progression.
We do recommend doing some ’tow-foiling’ prior to your holiday if at all possible. This involves getting towed behind a boat to get used to the feeling of rising up out of the water on a hydrofoil.
