Essaouira

Essaouira is a lovely town by the sea in Morocco, with about 78,000 people living there. It sits right on the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by beautiful beaches. Many people come here from all over the world to enjoy activities like windsurfing, kitesurfing, and surfing. The old part of the town has buildings influenced by Berber, Portuguese, and French styles. The town used to be called "Mogador," which means "little fortress," because of the big walls around it. Besides being a great spot for water sports, Essaouira also has a rich history and culture.

The best waves for surfing are usually in spring and autumn, reaching heights of 1 to 2 meters. In the summer, the waves are a bit smaller due to the strong winds, around 0.5 to 1 meter. The wind mostly blows from the side of the shore and gets stronger in the summer months. People who love excitement usually go surfing or kitesurfing in the afternoons.

There are other places nearby that are great for ocean sports too:

Moulay Bouzerktoun: It's a small fishing village about 30 kilometers north of Essaouira. The beach here is famous among experienced windsurfers because of the unique waves. Be careful of the rocky bottom when the tide is low. The wind blows from the side and can be very strong in the summer. It's also a good spot for stand-up paddleboarding when there's no wind.

Sidi Kaouki: This spot is about 25 kilometers south of Essaouira. It's a long sandy beach perfect for experienced surfers and increasingly popular among kitesurfers because of the strong side-shore wind. The waves here are a bit bigger and more surfable than in Essaouira. Just be cautious of the currents. Sidi Kaouki is a small village with a few bars, restaurants, and grocery stores.

Kitesurfing conditions in Essaouira are most suitable for the more confident kitesurfer, as the wind is quite strong and there are waves in parts of the bay. Beginner and improvers are catered for but it can be that some afternoons are too difficult at this level. For intermediate riders looking to improve their wave riding, as well as more advanced kitesurfers who just want to play on waves all day, this is a fantastic destination for a kitesurfing holiday.

You will start with the basics; this includes setup of your equipment, safety features that you will utilise and how to fly a small 2metre trainer kite. When your instructor feels you are ready you can then head to the water. On day one you will only be using the kite and not go on the board just yet. Entering the water is when the fun starts! The wind in Essaouira predominantly blows cross offshore from the right. Mornings are the best time for beginners, and kids as this is before the wind has picked up, and in turn, the sea is a lot calmer. After 11am the wind has really begun blowing and is when the more experienced windsurfers begin to launch. By 12 o'clock the wind has picked up significantly and continues to blow stronger throughout the day. The wind in Essaouira blows strongest in July and August, and in these months it is regularly a very, very high wind destination, but the wind is reliable all the way from April until November.

There is an excellent Wingfoiling centre in Essaouira, stocking all the latest Duotone equipment, with a great range of Wing, board and foil sizes. You can learn to wingfoil in Essaouira, but due to the wave conditions, this would be pretty challenging. Essaouira is best suited to those who can area Wing Foil and would like to try getting into waves; this is when Wing Foiling can get exciting!

In Essaouira, the wind mainly blows from the side and comes from the right when you look at the sea. Sometimes, it's less steady, a bit gusty, and shifts slightly away from the land. From June to August, the wind gets stronger because the thermal wind strengthens the trade winds. In the mornings, the wingfoil centre in Essaouira offers courses, while in the afternoons, adventure enthusiasts take to the water for some thrilling sailing.
