Kitesurfing Holidays in Tarifa, Spain
In spring and summer, the main wind in Tarifa comes from the east, called the Levante. It blows onto the shore from the left side when facing the ocean. In autumn and winter, the wind shifts to the west, known as the Poniente, blowing from the right side. This wind increases wave height and power. During summer, waves are small with some choppy areas, while in fall and winter, thanks to the Poniente, there are good waves.
Tarifa is a popular spot for kitesurfing with many locations. It gets very busy in June, July, and August, so it's better to visit in April, May, September, or October to avoid crowds. Learning to kitesurf here is challenging but possible. Beginner courses depend on wind conditions and are not always available.
For experienced kiters, Tarifa is excellent. The main kitesurf school is at Valdevaqueros, around 10 minutes from the old town. It's a windy spot with a beautiful sandy beach, surrounded by lush vegetation. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, and wingfoiling are taught here safely due to the bay's shape. There's a rescue boat available for emergencies, free of charge.
About 60 km from Tarifa, Los Caños de Meca is great for surfing waves in spring and summer. The kitesurf school can arrange transfers there when conditions are right, and they can bring rented equipment. The closest spot to the village is better for windsurfing, while kitesurfers prefer sailing towards the Trafalgar lighthouse on the beach.

In winter, there may be a shorebreak when the Poniente wind blows.
About 60 km from Tarifa, Los Caños de Meca offers the best conditions for surfing waves on the Costa de la Luz, especially in spring and summer. The windsurfing school can arrange transfers to Los Caños de Meca when conditions are right and can take rented equipment there. The closest spot to the village is mainly for windsurfing, with a rocky slab for launching.
Wingfoiling Holidays in Tarifa, Spain
In Tarifa, there are two main winds: the Levante and the Poniente. In spring and summer, the Levante blows from the east, making it an onshore/side-offshore wind. It comes from the left when you look at the ocean. During autumn and winter, the Poniente wind picks up more, coming from the west. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, and wingfoiling are taught easily here because the bay's shape makes it safe. It's also safe during Levante days because if you have trouble getting back to shore, you'll drift towards the dune. There's a free rescue boat available if needed. Sometimes in winter, there's a shorebreak when the Poniente wind blows.
